Larnaca — Where Flamingos Meet the Palm-Lined Shore

Overview

Larnaca sits on Cyprus's south coast, 4 km from the international airport that carries most visitors onto the island — making it many travelers' first and last stop, even when it isn't the main destination. That accident of geography undersells it: this is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, built on the ruins of ancient Kition.

Its most photographed street is Finikoudes, a palm-lined promenade running along a Blue Flag beach where the Church of Agios Lazaros — a 9th-century Byzantine church built over the tomb of the biblical Lazarus — anchors the old town just steps from the water.

Just past the airport runway, Larnaca Salt Lake turns into a wintering ground for thousands of flamingos each year, with Hala Sultan Tekke — one of the most important Islamic shrines outside Mecca — sitting on its southern shore, framed by palm groves and cypress trees.

Larnaca is also a diving hub, home to the Zenobia — a 172-meter ferry wreck regularly ranked among the world's best wreck dives — and sits within easy striking distance of Nicosia, Ayia Napa, and the lace-making village of Lefkara.
