Anaklia — Georgia's Newest Seaside Escape

One of the very first fishing ports on the Black Sea, Anaklia has a history stretching back to the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, when the settlement of Dikha Gudzuba thrived here in the 6th–5th centuries BCE. That deep history sits alongside a much newer identity: since 2010, Spanish architect Alberto Domingo has redesigned the resort's promenade, hotels, and public spaces almost entirely from scratch.

The centerpiece of that redevelopment is the pedestrian bridge over the Enguri River — one of Europe's longest — connecting Anaklia to the neighboring beach village of Ganmukhuri. Unlike the pebble beaches further south in Batumi and Kobuleti, Anaklia's coastline is genuinely sandy, and the resort is free of industry, ports, and major roads, keeping the water unusually clean.

Anaklia is also the gateway to Georgia's UNESCO-listed Kolkheti wetlands, and its location near Zugdidi makes it a natural stop for combining a beach stay with day trips into Samegrelo and Svaneti.
