Overview
The capital of Upper Svaneti, Mestia sits at 1,500 meters in a remote valley of the Greater Caucasus, historically isolated from the rest of Georgia for months at a time each winter — a seclusion that let the Svan people preserve a distinct language, architecture, and culture found nowhere else in Europe.
The town's skyline is defined by its stone defensive towers, part of a UNESCO-listed collection of roughly 175 medieval towers scattered across Svaneti's villages, built between the 9th and 13th centuries as refuges during clan conflicts and invasions.
Mestia is also the gateway to Ushguli, a cluster of four villages at 2,200 meters often cited as Europe's highest continuously inhabited settlement, set beneath Mount Shkhara — at 5,193 meters, Georgia's highest peak.
