At the foot of glacier-capped Mount Kazbek, the mountain town of Stepantsminda — known to nearly everyone as Kazbegi — pairs the postcard silhouette of Gergeti Trinity Church with some of the Caucasus's best high-altitude trekking.
Overview
Officially named Stepantsminda but still known to nearly everyone as Kazbegi, this mountain town sits at 1,740 meters in the valley of the Tergi River, at the foot of Mount Kazbek — Georgia's third-highest peak at 5,047 meters, permanently capped in glacier.
The town's defining image is the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church, perched at 2,170 meters on a rocky ledge above the village, with Kazbek rising directly behind it — one of the most photographed views in the Caucasus, and reachable by a steep 3 km trail or 4x4 taxi.
Beyond the church, Kazbegi is the jumping-off point for serious trekking, the volcanic Truso Valley with its mineral springs, and the stone tower village of Sno — with the ski resort of Gudauri just 35 km back down the Georgian Military Highway.

Distance & Connectivity
Along the Georgian Military Highway, via Mtskheta, Ananuri Fortress, and Gudauri. Marshrutka minibuses depart from Tbilisi's Didube bus station roughly hourly. From the town center, 4x4 taxis (~10–15 minutes) reach the Gergeti Church trailhead area, or it's a 1–1.5 hour hike.
