Kutaisi Georgia's 3,000-Year-Old City

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Kutaisi anchors western Georgia with two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, a walkable historic center, and easy access to some of the country's most dramatic caves and canyons.

Overview

With a history stretching back over 3,000 years, Kutaisi was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis — the legendary destination of Jason and the Argonauts — and later the medieval capital of a unified Georgia. Today it's the country's legislative capital and third-largest city, a relaxed, walkable base for exploring western Georgia.

Bagrati Cathedral, built in 1003 and still visible from almost anywhere in the city, dominates the skyline from its hilltop, while the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery — founded in 1106 by King David the Builder as both a religious center and an academy — holds his tomb beneath its entrance gate and remains an active monastery today.

Kutaisi is also the natural gateway to some of Georgia's most striking natural sites: Prometheus Cave's illuminated underground rivers, the abandoned Soviet-era spa town of Tskaltubo, and the canyons and waterfalls of Martvili and Okatse, all within an hour's drive.
