Spinalonga — Agios Nikolaos

Duration: 5–10 hrs (depends on your location)

Trip Description

This excursion introduces you to one of the most scenic corners of Crete. The journey begins with a visit to the Monastery of St. George Selinaris — a peaceful retreat nestled among the picturesque mountains between Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion, steeped in the quiet spirit of Cretan Orthodoxy.

From there, the route continues to the charming town of Agios Nikolaos — the jewel of Mirabello Bay, known for its unique Lake Voulismeni, connected to the sea by a narrow channel, and its lively waterfront promenades. The highlight of the route is a visit to the island fortress of Spinalonga — once the last active leper colony in Europe, whose dramatic history inspired Victoria Hislop's novel "The Island."

After a full day of exploration, you will sit down to lunch at a traditional Cretan taverna, before rounding off the day with a visit to the Vassilakis Estate olive oil farm, where you will discover the secrets of Crete's liquid gold and taste the finest produce straight from the source.
